Discover diverse culture of Kyushu and its foreign roots
The itinerary is packed with the eclectic history and culture of Kyushu. While the southern island of Kyushu is mostly famous for its mild climate and picturesque nature, the region has also been known as an important point for cultural integration, with Nagasaki in particular greatly influenced by the Dutch and Chinese cultures.
From the architecture and food of Nagasaki to the Dutch themed park built with Japanese precision, this 6-day tour digs a little deeper on Kyushu’s unique culture and history with its foreign ambience. You’ll also have the chance to visit Peace Park, World Heritage Gunkanjima island and other must-go spots like Fukuoka’s vibrant food stalls and a relaxing canal cruise in Yanagawa.
This tour will take you completely beyond imagination, and is perfect for those who wish to explore beyond Japan’s major cities like Tokyo and Kyoto.
Welcome to vibrant city of Fukuoka!
Check in to Miyako Hotel Hakata, a brand new hotel located just a few minutes walk from JR Hakata station. Your journey begins at this stylish hotel, featuring spacious and stylish rooms with room size over 30m², and access to both rooftop pool and indoor natural hot spring.
Meet your tour escort and fellow travellers at the hotel and enjoy a local gourmet dinner together.
* If you are arriving between 9am and 11am at Fukuoka airport, you can request a tour escort to meet you. The escort will provide directions and assist with making your own way to the hotel.
Hop on a limited express train to Huis Ten Bosch, Japan’s largest theme park recreating a 17th-century style Dutch Town. While the train allows you to enjoy the countryside scenery of Kyushu, it leads you to a little piece of the Netherlands with beautiful windmills, canals and splendid seasonal flowers. At Huis Ten Bosch, not only you can witness Japan’s ultrahigh precision in recreating an entire foreign town, you can also learn how Japan has adopted foreign culture throughout its history. Enjoy a full day exploring the vast park visiting attractions including museums, shops, restaurants, theatres and rides.
Grab your overnight bag and take the limited express train Kamome to stretch out to Nagasaki! Discover the eclectic ambience that Nagasaki offers – from the oldest catholic church in Japan, Oura Tenshudo to a foreign settlement site, Glover Garden. Nagasaki was Japan’s only window to the world during the period of national isolation that went for 200 years, and the mixture of cultures you can see in the city gives you a unique insight of Japanese history.
The tour will also include a visit to Peace Park, a tranquil place of prayer for world peace.
In the evening, enjoy one of the most spectacular night views of Japan from the summit of Mt. Inasa.
Please note: The footpaths in Glover Park are a series of sloping hills and uneven cobblestones. Please use the moving walkways where available.
Located about 20km offshore from Nagasaki port floats an abandoned “battleship island”. The nickname coming from its battleship-like silhouette, this concrete-made island was once a symbol of Japan’s industrialization with its coal mining in the 1960s. It is now an uninhabited World Heritage site, also known from being featured in a James Bond film. Set sail to land on the island and imagine the way of life of its former inhabitants. After immersing in the Bond movie set, you will take a short stop at Dejima, a historic Dutch trading post island in Nagasaki before taking a trip back in time for the train home.
After coming back to Fukuoka by limited express train, enjoy free time to explore the local delicacies.
Start the day with a visit to Yanagawa “the Venice of Kyushu” by local train. In Yanagawa, a town meshed in hundreds of kilometres of canals, take a ride on a low flatboat and enjoy the beautiful view of the greens and sunlight reflecting on the water. For lunch, enjoy a meal of the iconic local delicacy of grilled and steamed unagi (eel) in sweet and spicy sauce with rice.
Moving on to Dazaifu Tenmangu, a magnificent shrine dedicated to the spirit of the learned scholar, enjoy a walk along serene gardens, and snack on locally-loved Umegae Mochi rice cake and deep-fried chicken Dazaifu Burger.
On this last night of the tour, we’ll end the day diving into Fukuoka’s food stalls for a farewell dinner!
Your tour officially concludes today.
